Why we cancelled Windmill 2021

2020-12-08 10:12

We are incredibly excited for the moment we can hangout together again. When this will be though, is still uncertain. With the approval of several vaccines there is light at the end of the tunnel. It’s likely that during 2021 Covid19 vaccines will be in distribution in most countries, but it will be a long process, we hope starting with the people who need it the most.

As most Windmill participants are healthy and young, many of us are likely to be offered a vaccine after June. This makes it impossible to host an international event like Windmill around that time. Maybe some people will have had the privilege to be protected by June, but we don’t want to exclude anyone or any country from Windmill, because they aren’t allowed to come or don’t feel safe without a vaccine.

Why make the call now?

Organising Windmill requires a huge amount of effort from our volunteer crew and a full year of planning. Normally, we would be opening the team registration soon, have started the application for a permit and made the initial reservations with our suppliers. With the uncertainty ahead, we are unable to make firm plans for June. In addition, we wouldn’t want to put pressure on any team to apply for a spot at this moment in time. We have to take our responsibility to keep our crew and players (and their family and friends) safe. Therefore the best way of doing so, is to not host a Windmill in 2021.

You might be thinking, why not just organise a smaller tournament, with fewer/local teams, no party and social distancing? Simply put: that’s not Windmill. Our crew and the players have a passion for not only the ultimate frisbee, but also the festival side of Windmill - and the combination of these things is what makes Windmill, well, Windmill.

What’s next?

Windmill 2022? We don’t know yet, but we sure are keeping spirits high to see you in Amsterdam as soon as we can do so safely. We will have plenty of time to think of many special ways to welcome you back to the grounds we all know and love.

For now, stay fit, be careful, go the extra mile and make sure you are ready for it, because we will be!

We love you guys!
