About Amsterdam

World famous and centuries old, but still small enough to easily navigate by foot or bicycle, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most beautiful and action-packed capitals, offering everything from high brow culture to low brow entertainment. Whether you’re in the mood for a gourmet meal and a museum visit or a night eating vegan food, smoking, and dancing at one of the city’s many squats-turned-cultural venues, Amsterdam is sure to have something for you.

On this page you'll find information to help you get the most out of your visit to Amsterdam. Looking for a place to rent a bike, chow down, or get your party on? Below you’ll find a selection of our local favorites. If you’re looking for something specific and you can’t find it here, you can always ask the Windmill crew for their insider tips.

    Tourist Info

Want to check out the city while you’re in town? In our opinion, no trip to Amsterdam would be complete without seeing one of the city’s world famous museums (especially the Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum), checking out the old crooked houses and tree-lined canals and monumental churches in the city center (especially the Jordaan neighborhood), chilling in one of the city’s many beautiful parks (the Vondelpark is a classic), and maybe even paying a visit to one of the city’s many coffeeshops.

If you plan on leaving the fields to explore Amsterdam, we recommend renting a bike to get around. Cycling in Amsterdam is very safe, more convenient than using public transportation, and also not much more expensive, if at all. The metro, trams, and regular buses cost 2,80 for a single ticket and stop running around 12:30AM, after which you can only take a night bus to get back to the fields at a cost of 4,50 per person. On the other hand, renting a bike for 3 days generally costs about 18 euros per person.

As a major European capital, Amsterdam is naturally home to restaurants from all of the world’s major cuisines. However, if you want to eat like the Dutch do, we recommend trying out one of the city’s many delicious and affordable Surinamese or Indonesian restaurants, or traditional Dutch cuisine such as pancakes. If you’re in the mood for a late night snack, nothing hits the spot like Belgian fries (‘Vlaamse Frites’ - try the ‘Oorlog’ sauce!), a falafel from MAOZ or a greasy treat pulled out of the wall at one of the city’s many FEBO snack bars. As the Dutch would say: Eet smakelijk! (Bon apetit!)

Bars, Clubs, and of course - Coffeeshops!

Amsterdam is home to over 1200 bars and clubs, so there’s a place for everyone to enjoy themselves into the wee hours of the morning.

    Bar: De Nieuwe Anita
A very charming little bar in a former squat, decorated like your grandma’s living room and patronized by a hip and international crowd, that hosts interesting entertainment throughout the week.
    Address: Frederik Hendrikstraat 115
Distance from the fields: 6,2 km

    Coffeeshop: Cafe De Kashmir Lounge
Perhaps the coziest coffeeshop in Amsterdam. The DJs actually play good music, lots of comfy places to lounge, and best of all, they have two shops on opposite sides of street, one of which has a bar, so you can buy weed, smoke it, and enjoy a beer - a rarity in Amsterdam!
    Address: Jan Pieter Heijestraat 85-87
Distance from the fields: 6,3 km

Club / Bar / Restaurant: Pacific Parc
This former factory space now houses a restaurant/cafe by day and bar/club by night known for its eclectic music selection, diverse crowd, and - perhaps most importantly - free entry.
    Address: Polonceaukade 23
Distance from the fields: 6,4 km

    Bar / club: OT301
Formerly a film academy which was squatted in the '90s, OT301 hosts live music, DJ nights, film nights, and contains a very affordable vegan restaurant called De Peper where you can also catch the occasional intimate music performance.
    Address: Overtoom 301
Distance from the fields: 6,8 km

    Bar / club: OCCII
Squat which hosts (usually punk / rock'n'roll) live music and DJ nights. Around the corner you can find De Binnenpret, where they host very cheap vegan dinner nights.
    Address: Amstelveenseweg 134
Distance from the fields: 6,8 km

    Coffeeshop: La Tertulia
Relaxed mother-and-daughter-run coffeeshop decorated with plenty of plants, a waterfall and lots of sunlight, which balances harmoniously with their all-bio buds and scrumptious weed brownies.
    Address: Prinsengracht 312
Distance from the fields: 7,5 km

    Coffeeshop: Barney's Coffeeshop
Good quality coffeeshop that also serves huge English & Irish breakfasts, winner of multiple “High Times Cup” awards.
    Address: Haarlemmerstraat 102
Distance from the fields: 7,6 km

    Club: Melkweg
Legendary squatted milk factory (hence the name, which means "Milky Way" in Dutch) turned club, which hosts concerts and dance nights. They also have decent restaurant and a movie theater upstairs.
    Address: Lijnbaansgracht 234a
Distance from the fields: 7,7 km

    Address: Raamsteeg 4

Distance from the fields: 7,9 km

    Club: Paradiso
This legendary venue in a squatted former church hosts (indie) rock concerts and dance nights seven days a week.
    Address: Weteringschans 6-8
Distance from the fields: 7,9 km

    Coffeeshop: Tweede Kamer Coffeeshop
Small and intimate, this shop embodies the refined look and feel of old jazz sophistication. Aided by a bakery around the corner, their spacecakes are sweet and lovely. The hash is highly regarded, but seating is extremely limited.
